FAQ

What is microground tea?

Microground tea means the tea leaves are milled superfine so they are easily dissolved in water or liquid.

Black tea, Chinese green tea, and matcha powders are finely ground, yet they differ in their particle sizes. Typically, black tea powder and Chinese green tea have a particle size of about 30-40 microns, which is slightly coarser compared to matcha powder, which usually ranges from 5 to 10 microns. The finer consistency of matcha is achieved through a meticulous refinement process that removes all twigs and stems.

Is microground tea the same as instant tea?

NO.  Instant teas are black teas that have been brewed in large concentrated quantities and then air or spray dried with high heat until all water is evaporated.  What's left is a water soluble tea powder with less real brewed tea taste.  Microground tea leaves are ground fresh into fine powder so that they are easily dissolved in water.  Due to the nature of microground teas there will be some sediment left at the bottom of your drink.  This is natural and proves our powders were ground, never brewed and air dried.

Do you need to brew or steep microground teas?

No.  They are ready to drink right away by simple adding water.  They can be brewed longer for stronger flavor, and this will also increase the tannins, or bitter properties.

What is the caffeine content of microground teas?

In a 1 teaspoon serving of black tea powder, there's about 70 milligrams of caffeine.
In a 1 teaspoon of Chinese green tea and Japanese matcha powder, there's about 50 milligrams of caffeine.
What is black tea powder?
Black tea powder is made from the tea plant leaves (Camellia sinensis) that has been dried and ground superfine into a powder.  The processing of the leaves before they are ground determines the type of tea, its flavor, strength, caffeine content, and color.  The most common black tea powders are Ceylon, Earl Grey, Yunnan Gold, Da Hong Pao, and Pu-erh Tea.
What is green tea powder?
Green tea powder is finely ground tea leaves from the tea plant.  At Microground Teas, we make a definite distinction between two types of green tea powders:  Green and Matcha.
What is the difference between green tea powder and matcha tea powder?
At Microground Teas, we make a definite distinction between the two tea powders:
  1. Green tea powder is tea grown in China or India that is ground very fine.
  2. Matcha tea powder, or Japanese tea powder, is tea grown and processed in Japan to traditional specifications and then ground superfine to the finest ground particle available.
Although matcha is a green tea, not all green teas are matcha.  Matcha is simply traditional Japanese tea powder.  Jasmine tea powder is Chinese tea powder, and Hojicha is Chinese tea powder that contains leaves, twigs and stems that have been roasted.
